Why Won't My AC Turn On?

Short Answer

When your AC won't turn on, check the thermostat first (batteries, settings), then check the circuit breaker. In Phoenix, failed capacitors are extremely common due to heat stress, if you hear a humming or clicking sound but the unit won't start, that's likely the issue. A completely silent outdoor unit usually indicates a power or contactor problem.

Common Causes

Thermostat Issues

Dead batteries, incorrect settings, or a malfunctioning thermostat can prevent your AC from receiving the signal to turn on. This is the easiest thing to check and often the culprit.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

AC systems have dedicated circuit breakers that can trip due to power surges, storms, or electrical issues. Phoenix's monsoon season brings frequent power fluctuations that trip breakers.

Blown Fuse

The outdoor unit has a disconnect box nearby that often contains fuses. These can blow due to power surges or electrical problems, cutting power to the condenser unit.

Safety Switch Triggered

Modern AC systems have safety switches that shut down the unit if the drain pan is full (float switch) or the unit is overheating. These protect your home but prevent operation until addressed.

Failed Capacitor

Capacitors store energy to start the compressor and fan motors. Failed capacitors are extremely common in Phoenix due to our extreme heat, they simply can't handle 115°F+ temperatures day after day.

Contactor Failure

The contactor is an electrical switch that controls power to the compressor. Burned or pitted contactors can prevent the outdoor unit from receiving power even when everything else works.

What Should You Do?

Try This First

  • Check thermostat batteries and replace if needed
  • Verify thermostat is set to COOL and temperature is below current room temp
  • Check the AC's circuit breaker in your electrical panel, reset if tripped
  • Check the outdoor unit's disconnect box (usually a gray box on the wall nearby)
  • Make sure the emergency shutoff switch (if present) is in the ON position

Call a Pro If...

  • The breaker keeps tripping after reset
  • The outdoor unit makes a humming or clicking sound but won't start
  • You smell burning or see scorch marks near electrical components
  • The indoor unit works but the outdoor unit is completely dead
  • You've checked all obvious issues and the system still won't turn on
  • The system turned off suddenly and won't restart
