Understanding MERV Ratings

Which air filter is right for your home?

The Short Version

MERV 11-13 is the sweet spot for most Phoenix homes. These filters capture fine desert dust, pollen, and pet dander without excessively restricting airflow. MERV 8 and below only catch large particles. MERV 13+ provides the best allergy relief but requires a compatible HVAC system. Higher isn't always better, filters that restrict airflow can damage your system.

Quick Comparison

Factor MERV 8 and Below MERV 11-13
Captures Large Dust Yes Yes
Captures Pollen Partial Yes
Captures Pet Dander No Yes
Captures Dust Mites No Yes
Captures Mold Spores No Yes
Captures Bacteria No Some (MERV 13)
Airflow Impact Minimal Moderate
Filter Cost $5-15 $15-50
System Compatibility All systems Most systems

Detailed Breakdown

MERV 8 and Below

Pros
  • Works with all HVAC systems
  • Minimal impact on airflow
  • Inexpensive filters
  • Protects HVAC equipment adequately
Cons
  • Doesn't capture small allergens
  • Pet dander passes through
  • Limited allergy relief
  • Fine desert dust not captured
Best For:

Homes without allergy concerns, or systems that can't handle higher MERV ratings.

MERV 11-13

Pros
  • Captures most allergens
  • Effective against fine dust
  • Removes pet dander
  • Traps mold spores
  • Good balance of filtration and airflow
Cons
  • Higher filter cost
  • May restrict airflow in older systems
  • Need more frequent replacement
  • Some systems need modification
Best For:

Allergy sufferers, pet owners, and anyone wanting cleaner indoor air. The sweet spot for most homes.

Phoenix-Specific Considerations

MERV ratings measure a filter's ability to capture particles. Higher MERV = smaller particles captured.

MERV Rating Quick Reference

  • MERV 1-4: Large particles only. Protects equipment, not air quality.
  • MERV 5-8: Dust, some pollen. Standard builder-grade filters.
  • MERV 9-12: Fine dust, pollen, pet dander, mold. Good for allergies.
  • MERV 13-16: Bacteria, smoke, very fine particles. May require system modification.
  • MERV 17-20: Hospital-grade. Not for residential HVAC.

Phoenix-Specific Advice

Our fine desert dust is a challenge. Standard MERV 8 filters don't capture it well. For Phoenix homes, we typically recommend:

  • MERV 11: Good baseline for most homes
  • MERV 13: Best for allergies, pets, or sensitive individuals

Before Upgrading: Check Your System

Higher MERV filters restrict airflow. Most modern systems handle MERV 11-13 fine, but older systems may struggle. Signs of a problem include reduced airflow, frozen coils, or short cycling. We can evaluate your system's capability.

Filter Thickness Matters Too

4-5" thick filters have more surface area than 1" filters. They capture more particles with less airflow restriction and last longer. If your system can accommodate thick filters, they're a better choice than high-MERV thin filters.

Our Recommendation

For most Phoenix homes, we recommend MERV 11-13 filters. This range captures fine desert dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores without excessively restricting airflow. If you have allergies or respiratory concerns, lean toward MERV 13. If you're not sure if your system can handle higher MERV ratings, we can evaluate it.
