The Trane Choice 16 (formerly the XR16, and briefly called the Choice 15) is a single-stage heat pump with a higher efficiency rating than the Choice 14. It offers a modest improvement in SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, which translates to slightly lower energy bills over the life of the system.

We carry and install the Choice 16, and it's a perfectly good system. However, we want to be transparent: for most homeowners, we recommend either stepping down to the Choice 14 (if budget is the priority) or stepping up to the Priority 17 (if you want meaningfully better performance). Here's why.

Key Features

Climatuff Compressor

Same reliable Trane compressor as the entire lineup.

Higher Efficiency Rating

Improved SEER2 over the Choice 14 for lower operating costs.

Spine Fin Outdoor Coil

Corrosion-resistant coil design for Arizona conditions.

Single-Stage Operation

Runs at full capacity like the Choice 14 - same on/off behavior.

Is This the Right System for You?

Ideal For

The Choice 16 makes sense when your budget is slightly above the Choice 14 but you want the highest possible efficiency in a single-stage system. It's also the right call if the Priority 17 doesn't come in the tonnage you need for your specific application.

Consider an Alternative If

The Choice 16 sits in a challenging price position. Its installed cost is close to the Priority 17, but it lacks the multi-speed inverter compressor that makes the Priority 17 meaningfully better in comfort, noise, and efficiency. The efficiency gain over the Choice 14 is real but modest, typically saving $50-100 per year on energy bills. For most homeowners, that small savings doesn't justify the price premium over the Choice 14. If you're going to spend more than the Choice 14, we generally recommend going to the Priority 17 where the jump in performance is much more significant.

Previously sold as the XR16 (and briefly as the Choice 15) with model numbers starting with 4TWR5. Current models use the 5TWR5 prefix with R-454B refrigerant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Trane Choice 16 Heat Pump answered by our team.

Ask Us Directly
Why don't you recommend the Choice 16 as a primary option?

It's not that the Choice 16 is a bad system. It's a solid Trane product. The issue is value positioning. Its price is close to the Priority 17, which offers a multi-speed inverter compressor (quieter, more efficient, better comfort). And its efficiency gain over the Choice 14 is modest. For most budgets, either the Choice 14 or Priority 17 delivers a clearer value proposition.
