Trane Priority 17 Heat Pump
Formerly XR17
The Trane Priority 17 (formerly the XR17) is our most-recommended heat pump for Phoenix homeowners. Its multi-speed inverter compressor is the key differentiator. Unlike traditional single-stage systems that are either fully on or fully off, the Priority 17 operates across 6 discrete speed stages, automatically selecting the lowest effective speed for current conditions. This means lower energy bills, better humidity control, more even temperatures, and significantly quieter operation.
We call this the "sweet spot" of the Trane lineup. It brings inverter compressor technology to a mid-range price point, delivering a meaningful upgrade in comfort and efficiency over single-stage systems without the premium cost of a fully variable-speed Premier system. When Trane introduced the multi-speed Priority 17, they discontinued the older two-stage XR16 because the multi-speed technology made it obsolete at a similar price point.
Key Features
Multi-Speed Inverter Compressor
Operates across 6 discrete speed stages, running at the lowest effective speed for current conditions. More nuanced than traditional two-stage, more affordable than fully variable-speed.
Spine Fin Outdoor Coil
Corrosion-resistant coil technology built for Arizona's dust, heat, and hard water conditions.
Better Humidity Control
Multi-speed operation runs longer cycles at reduced capacity, pulling more moisture from the air than short-cycling single-stage systems.
Noticeably Quieter
Lower speed stages run most of the time, making a real difference for bedrooms and outdoor living areas near the condenser.
Inverter Technology at a Mid-Range Price
Gets you into inverter-driven compressor technology without the premium price of a fully variable-speed system.

Is This the Right System for You?
Ideal For
The Priority 17 is our top recommendation for homeowners who plan to stay in their home for 5+ years and want a meaningful upgrade in comfort and efficiency over a single-stage system. The multi-speed inverter compressor delivers noticeably quieter operation and better temperature consistency at a price point well below fully variable-speed systems. It's the best value in the Trane lineup for most Phoenix homes.
Consider an Alternative If
If budget is your absolute top priority and you're comfortable with the noise and on/off cycling of a single-stage system, the Choice 14 will cool your home reliably for less money. If you want the absolute peak in comfort, efficiency, and quiet operation - and are willing to invest for it - the Premier 18's variable-speed compressor takes performance to another level.
Pricing & Investment
The Priority 17 sits in the middle of the Trane lineup and represents what we consider the best overall value. The step up from a Choice 14 typically adds a moderate premium that most homeowners recoup through lower energy bills within 3-5 years. We provide free in-home estimates with full pricing transparency and offer financing options.
Warranty Coverage
The Priority 17 comes with a 12-year limited parts warranty when registered within 60 days - two years more than the Choice tier. TCS-installed systems are eligible for enhanced coverage. We also provide our lifetime workmanship warranty on the installation.
A2L Refrigerant Transition
Legacy model prefix: 4TWR7
Previously sold as the XR17 with model numbers starting with 4TWR7 (R-410A). The R-410A version used a traditional two-stage compressor. Current models (5TWR7) use R-454B refrigerant and feature an upgraded multi-speed inverter compressor with 6 stages, a significant improvement over the older two-stage design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Trane Priority 17 Heat Pump answered by our team.
Ask Us DirectlyNoticeably quieter. The lower speed stages produce around 68 dB compared to 72+ dB for single-stage systems. Decibels are logarithmic, so each 3 dB reduction represents roughly a halving of perceived loudness. Since the Priority 17 runs at lower speeds most of the time, you hear the quieter setting the vast majority of the day.
The compressor has 6 discrete speed stages instead of the traditional on/off or low/high. On a typical 105F day, the system runs comfortably at one of the lower stages. Only on extreme heat days does it ramp up to full capacity. This means longer, gentler cooling cycles that distribute air more evenly and pull more humidity. It's a step beyond traditional two-stage technology but more affordable than fully variable-speed.
The Priority 17 is the successor to the XR17, but with a significant upgrade. The old XR17 (4TWR7) used a traditional two-stage compressor. The current Priority 17 (5TWR7) uses a multi-speed inverter compressor with 6 stages and R-454B refrigerant. It's a better system at the same price tier.
